South Morang is one of the suburbs of Victoria, Australia. It sits 20 km northeast of the central business district of Melbourne which is within the Whittlesea City’local government area.
Suburbs surrounding South Morang are Wollert, Mernda, Doreen, Epping, Yarrambat, Lalor, Mill Park, and Plenty.
According to the 2021 census, South Morang has a population of 24,989.
‘Morang’ is an aboriginal term that means cloud or sky. The Wurundjeri balug and Wurundjeri Willam clans first settled in South Morang. Later on, European explorers and farmers arrived in the suburb.
Before it was named South Morang, the suburb was known as the Morang South. In 1893, the locals renamed the suburb Yan Yean Souths since it was lying below Yan Yean.
On November 1873, Morang South Post Office opened. Today, the post office is located at the Westfield Plenty Valley.
In 1889, the railway from Melbourne to South Morang was finished.
