About Preston

Preston is one of the suburbs in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It sits 9 km northeast of the Central Business District within Darebin City’s local government area.

According to the 2021 census, Preston has a population of 33,790.

History of Preston

In 1837, Robert Hoddle first surveyed the area. In the late 1830s lands were sold during the “lad boom” time in Melbourne.

In 1841, Samuel Jeffrey became the first permanent white resident of Irishtown, Preston’s early.

In 1850, the first store in Preston was established and opened by Edward Wood, a settler from Sussex, England. It’s located at the corner of Wood Street and High Street, which was also the district's first post office.

Members of Ebenezer Church meet at Wood’s store to change the suburb's name. Initially, they want to name the suburb after Barrington but it’s already taken. Instead, they chose Preston.

In March 1856, Preston Post Office opened.
