Mernda is a suburb located 30 km northeast of the central business district of Melbourne. It sits within Whittlesea City’s local government area. Suburbs surrounding Mernda includes Yan Yean, Wollert, Doreen, Epping, South Morang, and Yarrambat.
According to the 2021 census, Mernda has a population of 23,369 that year.
In 1841, the first structure The Bridge Inn was built in the area. In the same year, a small flour mill was developed on the Plenty River.
On February 1875, the suburb’s first post office opened. It was called Yan Yean as it is Situated near the Yan Yean and Yan Yean Reservoir.
Between 1893 to 1913, the suburb’s name was South Yan Yean. Due to people’s press for a name change, the town was renamed Mernda in 1913. The railway station and post office were also renamed.
Mernda means young girl.
One of the best places to visit in Mernda is the Mernda Villages Shopping Centre where you can find Woolworths supermarket and 10 other specialty stores. The shopping center also has 180 car spaces and bicycle facilities.
A 10-minute drive from Mernda is the Westfield Plenty Valley Shopping Centre.
