Ivanhoe is a suburb of Victoria, Australia. It is located 9 kilometers northeast of the Central Business District of Melbourne. It sits within Banyule City’s local government area.
Suburbs surrounding Ivanhoe are Preston, Bellfield, Heidelberg, Thornbury, Eaglemont, Alphington, Kew East, and Ivanhoe East.
According to the 2021 census, Ivanhoe has a population of 13,374.
In 1854, the Greenway's Ivanhoe Hotel was opened. In 1860, the homestead "Chelsworth" was built. It was an early farming property in the suburb.
On September 1, 1874, Ivanhoe Post Office first opened. On May 17, 1926, Ivanhoe North Post Office located on Waterdale Road opened. In 1955, the Ivanhoe West Post Office opened but was closed in 1988.
The majority of the streets in Ivanhoe got their names from characters in the novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott.
In 1888, the main station building in a suburb called Ivanhoe train station was built.
In 1913, the property "Clarivue" was built, described as "the grandest of the early medieval domestic revival houses in Heidelberg".
The Ivanhoe shopping center strip has local historical and social significance. Some of its buildings were built in the 19th century between 1915-1940.
