About Essendon

Essendon is located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It sits 8 km northwest of the central business district of Melbourne. It is also within the Moonee Valley’s local government area.

History of Essendon

Wurundjeri clan are the first people who lived in Essendon. In 1803, James Fleming and Charles Grimes were the first known European explorers who settled in the Maribyrnong area.

The name of the suburb was named after Essendon Village in Hertfordshire, England. In the 1850s, Richard Green arrived in Victoria and settled near Melbourne.

On August 1856, Essendon Post Office opened.

On January 1871, the Victorian Railways services started operation servicing Essendon and Melbourne.
