Eltham is another suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It sits 20 km northeast of the city’s Central Business District which is situated within the local government area of the Shire of Nillumbik.
Suburbs surrounding Eltham are Briar Hill, Eltham North, Research, Montmorency, Lower Plenty, Templestowe, and Warrandyte.
According to the 2021 census, Eltham recorded a population of 18,847 during that year.
In 1848, a reserve for a village at the intersection of Yarra River and Diamond Creek was shown on maps. In 1851, the suburb’s first Crown allotments were subdivided and sold with the Little Eltham, a subdivision developed by J. M. Holloway.
During this time, Eltham’s town center was established around the intersection of Main Road and Pitt Street.
On February 1854, Eltham Post Office opened. In February 1860, Eltham’s first Cemetery Trust was appointed.
