About Doreen

Doreen is one of the suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It sits 29 km northeast of the Central Business District or Melbourne and is located within the Shire of Nillumbik and Whittlesea City’s local government areas.

Suburbs surrounding Doreen are Yan Yean, Arthurs Creek, Mernda, Doreen, Nutfield, South Morang, Yarrambat, and Hurstbridge.

According to the 2021 census, Doreen has a population of 27,122 during that year.

History of Doreen

In 1844, European settlers established Doreen. One of the early settlers was Patrick Reid, who owns the land called Hazel Glen.

In 1862, Hazel Glen was subdivided into farmland, which invited more settlers to come to the area. This led to the construction of a Methodist church. The church opened in 1862.

The name of the suburb, Doreen, came from John Gavan Duffy, the Victorian Postmaster-General.

In 1867, the first ever school in the suburb, Hazel Glen Common School, was completed.

Doreen is the home of six schools including Hazel Glen College, Laurimar Primary School, St Paul the Apostle Catholic School, Doreen Primary School, Plenty Valley Christian College, and Ivanhoe Grammar School.

Fifteen minutes from Doreen is the Bundoora campus of RMIT. Thirty minutes' drive from Doreen is the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University.
