About Coburg

Coburg is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It sits 8 km north of the Central Business District within the Darebin and Merri-bek cities' local government areas.

Suburbs surrounding Coburg are Murray Road, Gaffney Street, Merri Creek, Elizabeth Street, Moreland Road, Sussex Street, Melville Road, Devon Avenue, and West Street.

According to the 2021 census, Coburg has a population of 26,574.

History of Coburg

Prior to European settlement, Woiwurrung was the first settler in Coburg and Merri Creek.

Between 1837 – 1838, Robert Hoddle surveyed Coburg. Based on his record, Mr. Hyatt had a sheep station on the east bank of Merri Creek. In 1840, Henry Foot named the suburb Pentridge.

In 1842, The Golden Fleece, the first inn at Cobur was built on Sydney Road.

On 1 August 1853, the suburb’s first even Post Office opened. In January 1870, the suburb was renamed Coburg.

Tourist Attractions in Coburg

Coburg has no enclosed shopping mall. The suburb’s main commercial precinct has over 250 shops, several supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths, a small indoor market, and discount stores such as Dimmeys.

It also has four shopping arcades located on the west side of Sydney Road.

Another must-visit places in Coburg are the HM Prison Pentridge, which was redeveloped into a housing estate.
