Brunswick is one of Melbourne, Victoria’s inner-city suburbs. It sits 5 km north of Melbourne's Central Business District, within Merri-bek City’s local government area.
According to the 2021 census, Brunswick has a population of over 24,896.
Aboriginal people knew Brunswick as Iramoo. The Wurundjeri people are the first people to live in Brunswick. In the 1830s, the white settlement began.
In 184, Edward Stone Parker and Thomas Wilkinson bought land in the suburb.
Wilkinson subdivided his land for rent or sale. He eventually marked two roads, which he name theVictoria Street and Albert Street.
Wilkinson's office opened in 1846, taking on the name of Wilkinson's estate and thus establishing the name of the whole area.
In 1892, the first hotel in the area called the Retreat Inn was built. Later on, it was renamed the Retreat Hotel.
